In a bold creative move sure to send shockwaves through the Dragon Ball universe, Toei Animation has unveiled its newest character: Doorknob.
"While details remain scarce, the studio did confirm that Doorknob is a powerful saiyan who will make his debut in the next chapter of the saga.
“We played around with a lot of different names,” said Shigeru Yamata, head writer for the franchise. “We were originally going to go with something more traditional like Fajita or Pancake but then someone said: 'what about household fixtures?' And it just blew our minds."
The decision has drawn mixed reactions from fans, some of whom worry that a name like Doorknob will undermine saiyan lore, which is foundational to the series. "Doorknob? Are you fucking serious? We haven't even gotten to proteins yet" said one fan, pointing to fact that saiyan naming conventions have yet to reflect all major food groups. "Is it too much to ask for a fucking Meatloaf or Branzino?" He then added, mimicking a Japanese accent.
Yamata, however, insists there’s no cause for concern. “We’re not abandoning our roots,” he said. “We'll definitely be sticking to our usual naming convention for the rest of the characters.”
While he declined to elaborate, Yamata did drop a subtle clue: “I can’t say too much yet, but let’s just say we’ve been on a... roll.” He said, pointing to a whiteboard behind him with the words "Charmin and Cottonelle" written in bold red letters.
