Sandfall Interactive announced on Tuesday that they will be updating the character model of their game's main antagonist, in an effort to make Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a more inclusive experience.

“We’ve heard your feedback loud and clear!” said Laurent Garnier, the studio’s marketing director "and we've taken steps to address it."

The move comes amid growing criticism over the game’s lack of diversity and failure to represent marginalized groups.

“This game is great" said one player, "but it's whiter than an NPR fundraiser. I came across so many characters during my playthrough: talking paintbrushes, psycho mimes, flying cushion monsters, but not a single black dude. Somehow.”

Not everyone agrees with that assessment, however, with some fans arguing that the world of Clair Obscur doesn’t lend itself to those kinds of distinctions. “I don’t want to spoil anything,” said another player, “but let’s just say that they’re all persons of color, technically.”

Many on the Sandfall team hope the change, set to go live with the next patch, will help ease concerns. “Hopefully this calms things down,” said Garnier. “Diversity is important to us, and we want that to be reflected both in-game and in the real world. Just give us a break on the office team photos, we're working on that next" he then added.
